Even though Hollywood looks forward to the Canadian festival now, they weren't always so friendly. During the mid-1970s, Hollywood studios ignored North American festivals and their requests for prints of various films, for fear the screenings would depress box office figures when the movies later went into wide release (Bradburn). Though organizers in Toronto hoped that a less short-sighted mogul would let them show a potential blockbuster during the festival’s opening night, none were released to the festival (Bradburn).
TIFF is also fantastic for our economy because it sells movie tickets, more hotel rooms are booked, more public transit is used, etc. TIFF is such a important event in this country that it is supported by the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario and the city of Toronto ("TIFF."). Print media outlets devoting significant coverage to TIFF include The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and the Toronto Sun ("Toronto International Film Festival").
